Four Mac Apps I can live without and seven that I can’t

I used to post the front-page of my iPhone, figuring that the apps that migrated to the front-page were the ones that I used most often,
or were the most valuable to me.  That got me thinking [Really? Can you prove it? -ed] about the apps I use on the Mac.  Looking at what is on my Dock, is not really a good proxy, since there are some apps there for convenience, but not because they are especially useful or valuable.  (I am talking about you, PowerPoint.)

So, here is the first in a series of posts about seven apps I can’t live without and four apps that I absolutely can.

Can’t live without:

#7 MacUpdater and #6 AppCleaner. These two apps are the yin and yang of keeping a Mac up-to-date.  MacUpdater checks for out-of-date apps and, depending on the app’s updateability, it helps keep them
up-to-date.  For apps that are available in the Apple App Store, it can launch the App Store.  For apps with automated updating ability, it
can trigger those updates.  Finally, for apps that only can be updated manually, it can launch the app or the web-site.  It is a pretty slick app, so check it out here and buy a license for it if you use it.

AppCleaner removes an app completely from your Mac.  Apps like to store preferences and helper files in other places on your Mac, and AppCleaner finds those for you and lets you remove them along with the app.  It is amazing how many files some apps install and where they install them!  Check out AppCleaner here.  I use this opportunistically when I want to delete an app, but you could make it a part of your monthly hygiene if you’d like.

Next time, the #4 app I can live without.
