Last time we looked at two apps I can’t live without, MacUpdater and AppCleaner. This time we’ll look at the first app that I can live without, #4 ChatGPT. Now, before haters hate, it is the app that I am talking about, not the capability. I still use ChatGPT in a browser, but when I ask the ChatGPT app the question, “How much of you is downloaded and usable without an internet connection?”, it responds with:
Essentially, none of “me” (the actual language model) is downloaded to your device.
What’s on your device when you install the ChatGPT app or use the web app is just:
- The interface (buttons, settings, cached chat history).
- Blah blah blah TL;DR…
So, if I truly want a local LLM, I use LM Studio. Running a local model, responds with:
Given that you are using a local instance of Qwen2.5-coder-32b-instruct, the entire model is downloaded and stored on your device. This means you have the full capabilities of the 32 billion parameter model available for use without needing an internet connection.
So, I can live without the local version of ChatGPT. Next time, the next two Mac Apps I can’t live without…
