A little while back, I did the first review of my iTunes Library with a graph of the songs by number of stars. I promised more details, and here they are:

This is songs by number of plays [hence, the title – .ed]. There are a few things to notice:
- There are a LOT of songs with zero plays. There are three reasons for that: First, some of the songs are new and I haven’t gotten to them yet. Second, some of the songs are not good and are not worth playing. This sometimes happens when there is one good song on an album but I have the whole album (“Special Beat Service” for example). Third, sometimes, the whole album is not good but I have it anyway. This often happens with live albums.
- There are a very few songs that get played a lot. In looking at them, five of the seven come from a workout playlist, so that makes sense. There is one song that is sitting with 97 plays right now, so it will likely be promoted to the 100+ list in the next couple weeks.
- There are a 1,000+ songs that have been played once and only once. 265 of them have four or five stars, so they will likely move up into the 2 through 9 bucket at some point soon.
I have a few smart playlists that I use to get into my library more deeply. One is “Unplayed – new” and it looks like I should listen to it more often since it has 185 songs that have been added in the last 60 days. Another is the “plays 0” list that I should get through, at least sorted by stars.
So, that is the next review of my music library. Let me know your thoughts on it.
You’re the only other person I know who uses stars and tracks this so diligently. Everyone there’s an iOS or MacOS upgrade, I fear Apple will break my manual syncing process. So far so good.
But I’m intrigued — which 7 songs have over 100 plays?
The most played song is Joan Jett & the Blackhearts singing “I hate myself for loving you.” The second most played song is “Professor Booty” by the Beastie Boys. Honestly, each of those surprise me, so my guess is that they are on playlists that get played a lot. I am not going to say the rest of them right now, because there are some “songs in waiting” in the high 90’s of plays, and when I get to a total of ten, I may post them all. Thanks for commenting!
