Speedtest.net in the sky

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

So Delta provided a free GoGo WiFi connection for my flight from Atlanta to Miami, so I figured I’d run speedtest.net from altitude.  Other than some odd thoughts about what “upload” and “download” mean from here, I thought the results were telling:

The closest server chosen was Dallas, Texas.

I got 1.36 Mb/s “down” meaning toward my Mac and .26 Mb/s “up” meaning down to the earth with 151 ms latency.  I expect the non-geeks have stopped reading already, so let me just say that that seems like a fairly decent T1 connection down and the latency is less than at one of my clients in the Northeast.  Go (or GoGo) figure!

Score one for technology!

New pictures!

New pictures here:  http://paultcottey.com/pictures.html  I realized I had been to four sporting venues this Summer, so I figured I would post them.  If you are keeping score at home, they are Wrigley Field, Comiskey Park Cellular Field, Busch Stadium, and Memorial Stadium in Champaign.  Not a bad run!

No bars in more places

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Sometimes a thought gets into my head and won’t leave.  Last week I tweeted “No bars in more places” to describe the cellular network provider-who-won’t-be-named.  For some reason, whether some sort of odd recursive screed or something else, I can’t get that out of my head.  So, I thought that if I repeated it here, it might finally exorcise it like sharing the song in my head with someone passes it on and lets my move on, even if it is at the expense of them having the some annoying 1980s bubblegum pop song stuck in their head.  But I digress.  Here goes:  ”No bars in more places.  A*&*.”

And having “no service” sucks battery like you can’t believe!  Have a nice day.
